Climate change event explores local and global impacts
Auckland International Campus partnered with the Waitakere Ethnic Board to hold a climate change event at Te Manawa in Westgate on Wednesday night.
The event featured expert speakers discussing the impact of climate change locally and globally.
Principal Lecturer Dr Olufemi Omisakin hosted the event and the first speaker was Principal Lecturer and Postgraduate Programme Manager Indrapriya Kularatne. Indra gave an overview of climate change and its impact internationally.
MP for Te Atatu Hon Phil Twyford then reflected on the West Auckland flooding in early 2023 and how he was involved in the aftermath of the event.
Tony Miquel then covered climate change and how it’s impacting Auckland, in particular West Auckland, and discussed some of the ways to plan for future events.
Damiloju Adeyina from the Green Building Council looked at what climate change means for housing, not just in terms of flooding but also ventilation, heating, and rising sea levels.
The final speaker, Rupinder Banger, was a representative of West Auckland is Flooding (WAIF) and covered the community work being done around flooding in the area.
Employability Specialist Christiaan Bredenkamp then led a panel discussion. There were some good questions from the audience and some differing views on where to next with climate change management.
Postgraduate students currently studying sustainability, as well as other interested students, were invited to attend, with two buses transporting 36 staff and students to the event.
